"Complex Trauma - Internal Worlds and External Realities"

"From the beginnings of psychoanalysis there has always been a tension between acknowledging external realities or predominantly focusing on the internal world. In the current world in which we live, how does external reality come into the work of therapy especially in treating individuals with complex trauma? How do we as therapists need to adjust our technique or our stance in relation to this? What is the impact of events such as the pandemic, Black Lives Matter, Men’s violence towards women or climate change on the therapeutic endeavour. In this lecture I hope to address some of these issues, bringing in trauma theory, neurobiology and attachment research alongside psychoanalytic theory and history to stimulate thoughts and discussion."

Dr. Joanne Stubley is a Medical Psychotherapist at the Tavistock Clinic. She leads the Tavistock Trauma Service and is a member of the British Psychoanalytic Society. She is also trained in Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (tf-CBT), Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) and MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for PTSD. Dr Stubley is Co-Chair of the Royal College of Psychiatrists Expert Reference group on historical child sexual abuse and a Clinical Trustee at the charity Freedom from Torture. She is co-editor of “Complex Trauma: The Tavistock Model”, due for publication December 2021.
